The Skirmish of the Roseroad was a minor conflict following the Tourney at Oldtown. Partially initiated by Lord Victor Tyrell by sending his bannermen to seize the entourage of the Royal Inquisition headed to King's Landing, the fighting started after Lord Baldric Baratheon told his soldiers to assault the men of the Inquisition who held him prisoner, as Lord Baldric and Lord Rodrik were suspected of supporting the known traitor Aegor Targaryen.

Prelude[]

After Lord Victor Tyrell arrived in Highgarden, he sent ravens to Lords Caswell, Footly and Merryweather to send troops to stop the entourage of the Crown, which was returning to the capital from the Grand Tournament. These soldiers were to take the men of the Inquisition captive, and free the two Lords Paramount that they suspected of having ties to Aegor Targaryen. The Prince of Dragonstone had seen that he was the King that Westeros needed, and had held a secret meeting while other lords were feasting at Oldtown. When it became known that Lords Baldric and Rodrik had taken part, the Inquisitor Godwyn Strong took them into custody of the Crown.

Of the Lords that Lord Victor summoned, only Lord Merryweather would receive the letter, the others having been misdirected to Viserys III himself and the culprit Saathos Naharis keeping one. Merryweather responded and sent men to block the Roseroad. Ser Selwyn Long, a commander of these men, rode to meet the Crown entourage, telling them that they had successfully captured the son of Aegor Targaryen, Aerion, and held him prisoner at Bitterbridge. Ser Godwyn was about to join Ser Selwyn to Bitterbridge, to see what should be done with Aerion Targaryen, but could not, as their captives rose against them.

Battle[]

Lord Baldric summoned his brother Arlan and all of his men to kill the Inquisitors, and as he did so, told Lord Stark that they would both be dead if they reached the capital. That was why the direwolf and merman banners also attacked, and also because among the ranks of the Inquisiton was Ser Mathis Frey, who carried Wolvesbane, the suspected second shard of the ancient greatsword Ice.

Though the Inquisitors seemed to have the upper hand at first, they were swiftly beaten back by the overwhelming numbers of their foes.

Ser Mathis Frey had his arm chopped off by Ser Arlan Baratheon, after which the stag went to kill his next Inquisitor. Ser Godwyn Strong proved to be a much too seasoned of a fighter, however, and instead it was Arlan who had his head removed from his body. After every one of his lackeys were beaten, Ser Godwyn was the last one to stand. Though he fought hard, he was surrounded and eventually killed by a massive amount of traitors. Traitors that he had sworn to annihilate.
